Friday, February 14, 2003
Philadelphia, Pa (February 2003)---The first class of students enrolled in an innovative pilot program funded by the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation that recruits individuals without jobs to train with Lincoln Technical Institute for guaranteed positions with Cottman Transmission, will graduate Friday, February 14, 2003, at 3PM at Lincoln Technical Institute, 9191 Torresdale Avenue, Philadelphia.
This initial graduating class has been trained for 16 weeks by both Lincoln Tech instructors and members of the Cottman Transmission home office technical department. The curriculum, the first of its kind in the country, offers hands on training for transmission installers in the diagnosis, electronics and installation of transmissions. Those enrolled in the class, all of whom had been unemployed upon entering into the program, are now guaranteed employment at a Cottman Transmission Center. There are over 350 Cottman Transmission centers throughout the country in 41 states.
The graduates starting salary is $10/hour. After five years of experience as a transmission technician, these trainees have the potential to earn from $45,000 to $100,000/year.
The Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation is an organization that continually seeks and supports innovative ways to put people to work in order to build a bridge to a better workforce. Cottman Transmission, founded in 1962, is the nation’s leading franchisor of transmission repair centers, and is on pace to open more than 50 locations this year. Lincoln Technical Institute operates a chain of training schools and is the country’s most respected trainer of skilled technicians.
“We are very proud to be affiliated with both the PWDC and Lincoln Tech in having instituted this innovative program,” states Todd Leff, President and CEO of Cottman Transmission, LLC. “This is a great example of a public-private partnership that puts people back to work in skilled positions. We are also very proud of the students in our first graduating class. They had to work hard to get in the program and complete the training and that speaks volumes about how they will function as employees going forward.”
