Brand New Louisville Cottman Man

Don Harris recently became the newest Cottman Man in the nationwide chain of independently-owned Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care centers. Don is a Louisville native and has received his Bachelors and MBA degrees from the University of Louisville.

On August 10, 2015, Don assumed ownership of the Cottman of Louisville, KY center at 4047 Taylorsville Rd., where transmission service is a specialty, but the full range of automotive service and repair is also available.

For ten years, Don was a partner at the Louisville-based advertising agency Alexander & Hughes, where he handled advertising and marketing for a wide range of clients including new and used car dealerships and other automotive-related services.   He then spent five years as vice president of marketing at Seven Counties Services, a non-profit organization that helps families dealing with behavioral health issues and substance abuse.

Both jobs were interesting and fulfilling, Don recalls, but over time he missed the thrill of being in business for himself. He began to look for a business he could build or buy.

When he learned that Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care center in Louisville, KY was available, he jumped at the opportunity, largely because Cottman had earned a solid reputation over the years for quality service and integrity in the market area.

Don inherits an experienced staff that is respected in the community, including five technicians and a manager. He plans to focus on marketing and sales, which is an area the former ad man knows well.

Honest Automotive Repair in Louisville, KY

“Ultimately, succeeding in this business comes down to customer service and integrity,” Don said. “Our focus is on diagnosing vehicles thoroughly and carefully, and then getting the job done right the first time. And it’s important to forthright and transparent in our work so the customer understands what’s being done and why.”

The newest Cottman Man, who is married with two daughters, considers himself “a car guy.” He’s always done his own basic service and repair work and he says he just enjoys being around cars.

He spends a lot of time on the road – not driving, but running. Don, 48, has been a runner for some 20 years. He’s run 23 marathons including the Boston marathon five times.

“Building a business is like running a marathon,” he said. “It’s a long and steady effort that takes dedication and stamina.”
